The Community You Will Join:
The Client Products & Emerging Tech team is a newly established team that builds impactful product features for Airbnb’s Guests and Hosts with new and existing technologies, as well as horizontal components such as navigation that aim to provide a cohesive user experience. The Senior Backend Engineer joining this team will play a critical role in the development of new features . They will be responsible for contributing to the broader technical vision for the team and building alignment across engineering and cross-functional teams - all while delivering a solution that is flexible, reliable and scales with the business needs.
The team is part of the Client Foundation & Products organization, which is responsible for Airbnb’s product infrastructure including Design Language System (DLS), UI frameworks, media frontend, and data access across different client platforms (Android, iOS, and Web). It plays a central role in Airbnb’s overall client strategy, contributes to libraries such as
Lottie and
Epoxy, and has more recently enabled Airbnb’s transition to Jetpack Compose.
The Difference You Will Make:
- Explore, shape, and develop new product experiences alongside cross-functional partners (design and product); from ideation to implementation at scale
- Lead investments into new technical capabilities that push the envelope and unlock product innovation
- Partner with peer engineering teams to integrate new features that impact different areas within the product
- Build efficient and reusable frontend/backend components, with high quality, while making sure to maintain performance and scalable systems
- Build services and APIs to drive existing and new features for web and mobile apps
- Work with data scientists and business analysts to define, capture, and use real-time event data for business insights and product features.
- Drive down costs and land performance wins via impactful optimizations and infrastructure upgrades
A Typical Day:
Millions of users across the world engage with the Airbnb app in multiple languages every day. As an engineer on the Client Products & Emerging Technologies a team, you would be critical to the continued success and broad appeal of Airbnb. In this role, you will have an opportunity to:
- Work collaboratively in cross-functional teams with design, product and data science partners, to define and ship impactful features.
- Present product and technical deep dives to key stakeholders.
- Propose architectural patterns of a high-scale web applications, such as well-designed APIs, data pipelines and efficient algorithms
- Build scalable high-quality and high-traffic products (or systems)
- Evaluate technical approaches and design product solutions to build new features
- Drive alignment, manage projects and effectively collaborate with stakeholders
- Writing unit and integration tests, reviewing other’s code
- Advocate for and participate in efforts to advance Airbnb’s engineering processes and technical foundations. Drive systemic improvements by identifying patterns to streamline development, reduce toil and increase technical quality and operational excellence over time
Your Expertise:
- 5+ years of software development experience
- Strong expertise in one or more back-end server languages (Java/Kotlin/C++/etc.)
- Experience in building and scaling high-quality and high-traffic products (or systems) in a distributed manner.
- End-to-end ownership mentality that transcends team boundaries.
- Passion for building strong collaborative relationships with other engineering & product partners
- Want to tackle projects with large open-ended scope and drive significant business impact
- Able to self-serve on data analysis and make data driven decisions
- Rigorous attention to detail and the ability to tackle ambiguous problems
- Embrace the ever changing culture, prioritize breadth over then in-depth but can still go in-depth when needed.
Your Location:
This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. While the position is Remote Eligible, you must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

How We'll Take Care of You:
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
Pay Range
$185,000—$223,000 USD
